Social Fund review cancelled

Children and Young People now are reporting that the review into Social Fund provision is being scrapped by the government:

"The government has revealed that it has scrapped the review of the Social Fund, which provides loans and grants to low-income families, despite criticism it is not meeting the needs of the most deprived.

"The fund exists to help low-income families with one-off expenses, such as new school uniforms and maternity grants. The previous government was in the process of consulting on a review of the fund after child poverty campaigners said it failed to reach enough disadvantaged families.

"But last week, in response to a parliamentary question, Liberal Democrat work and pensions minister Steve Webb revealed the government has no plans to make any changes to the conditions of eligibility for the fund.

"A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman confirmed that the review of the fund has been stopped."

OFGEM report highlights elimination of price premium for Prepayment Meter Customers

A new report from OFGEM reports that price premiums for customers paying by prepayment meter (often the method used by low income households] have been eliminated.  Annual costs are now, on average, £19 below the equivalent Standard Credit (SC) tariff customers [who pay bills retrospectively on receipt of a quarterly bill].  The report highlights that payment by direct debit is still the cheapest way to pay for utilities.
